Where in the World is Nellie VanOeveren LeynDyke?

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: , ,

This first piece of information that I look for when researching an ancestor is the census data.  I am in the process of making tables for each ancestor's census data to see where any gaps may be.  I have not been able to locate Nellie VanOeveren in the 1910 Census.  I believe she was living at home, age 14, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  I have tried looking for parents and siblings without finding them.  Where are you hiding, Nellie?  I think my trouble with finding the family may lie in the spelling of the last name.  If I have to go page by page to find them, I will.

Brenda,

I was able to find a copy of Polks for 1911 Grand Rapids online.

Page 934 lists 4 Abraham Van Oeverens. Loving a challenge and a mystery, I did a little sleuthing of my own and eliminated two of the addresses as possibles. The other two addresses were 36 Cole Avenue in Grand Rapids, which should be enumeration district 74 for Kent County, Michigan. The other is 114 Central Avenue in Wyoming, Michigan, which could be either ED 147 or 148.

Oh, there was a Nellie Van Oeveren on 137 Spencer Avenue as well. That would be Kent County enumeration district 75. I kind of doubt that will be your Nellie since she would have been so young at the time, and I agree she was probably still at home with her parents.

Good hunting!

Wow! Thank you so much. I believe the Cole Avenue address is the correct one. I am off to check out the census again. Thank you so much for your information.
