Once I have
identified an ancestor, I start my research by finding the ancestor I am
researching in the census records.
Usually, I start with the most recent census date and work backwards. I am creating tables for each ancestor with
the census information. This helps me to
see where I am missing information and what next steps I need to take in my
research. Below is the table for Kirk's
great grandfather, Willis G. Dollaway, who married Francis Denny. I have been unable to find Willis in the 1920
U.S. Federal Census. Willis and Francis
Dollaway would have had teenage children in the home during 1920. I found Wm. and his daughter, Leona, Dollaway
living at 150 Maple Street in Grand Rapids, in 1921, through the 1921 Grand
Rapids City Directory. There is not a
listing in the 1920 Grand Rapids City Directory for them. Where are you hiding Willis G. Dollaway?

The Grand Rapids Public Library has 3 x 5 cards filed alphabetically by last name in an old card catalog file. These surname card files have been a wealth of information for Kirk's Grand Rapids roots. The information that I found for Corcoran, Timothy F. is a funeral notice. In addition to the funeral notice being on the card, they put the name of the newspaper and date of publication. I have found this to be a very useful source to check. If you have Grand Rapids and surrounding area research to do, I recommend checking out this resource at the Main Grand Rapids Public Library on Level 4.
I hadn't, but Kirk's grandfather, Bert Corcoran, was voted that in his senior year.

27 members of Grand Rapids, Michigan Boys' Catholic Central High School held a mock election. A newspaper article reported the election results in the Grand Rapids Press 25 April 1922 edition on page 11; column 4 and 5.

Can you imagine being voted as the shark, rough neck, woman-hater, or baby? Things have certainly changed since 1922. High school's today would never be allowed to use derogatory labels. The teacher in me noticed that six of the students weren't voted for anything. I guess it isn't as noticeable in a larger school, but I wonder how they felt about being left out. Another thing that time has changed, I guess. They probably didn't give it another thought.
Kirk's great grandmother, Neeltje Cornelia

family. Nellie's son, Peter, didn't talk
a lot about her and most of what the family does know, I have found through
researching her. Nellie died when Peter was 15 years old. Peter was using the last name, Kennedy. When Peter was older he took his father's
name back and spelled it the best he could remember, Leyn Dyke, instead of
Luyendyk.

tragic, one and I plan on writing more about them in the weeks ahead.

Wouldn't you be ecstatic to walk into an antique store in your ancestor's hometown and find a picture of him or her hanging on the wall? I know I would be. I was hoping that might happen when we visited City Antiques at 945 Fulton SE, in Grand Rapids. Kirk has many ancestors that lived in the Grand Rapids area.

City Antiques has the usual inventory of antique home goods, jewelry and furniture. In addition, it has a wonderful selection of vintage photographs, many arranged on the walls in frames. Boxes of photographs are available to look through, too. Some even had names on the back of the pictures. Area school yearbooks were here as well. Unfortunately, we didn't find anything pertaining to Kirk's family.

Another area of interest at City Antiques is the curio cabinets of local interest. My husband and I were hoping that we might find some trinket from Bert Corcoran's store, Arcade News. Memorabilia was in stock for some of the historic Grand Rapids businesses, but none for Arcade News.

I like to visit antique stores when I am on a research jaunt and City Antiques is one of the better ones. Even if you do not find your relative, you will find pieces of history pertaining to the area your ancestor lived in and that can be a find in itself.

I find the details are what makes the ancestor come to life. When my husband and I visited Downer's Grove Public Library in Illinois we were able to find information on his great-great grandfather, Quirin Schmitt, that helped put the flesh on the bones, so to speak.

One resource that we found at the library was History of DuPage County, Illinois by Rufus Blanchard, copyright 1882. A full copy of the book is available at google books. I like to read county histories as they provide background information on the area where ancestors lived. It is even better when a biographical sketch of an ancestor is included in the history. Sometimes, the information may be embellished, but through further research I found Quirin Schmitt's sketch to be quite accurate.

Below is the information found in Blanchard's History of DuPage County, Illinois:

"Quirin Schmitt, wagon-maker, repairer and livery, Downer's Grove, was born in Europe April 30, 1853; his parents Roman and Sophia (Tilken) Schmitt, both deceased, were Europeans; of their nine children, seven are living, viz., Nicholas, George, Joseph, Amand, Quirin, Sophia and Therese. Subject, at the age of thirteen, began learning the wagon-maker's trade, which he has ever since followed. He came to Illinois in 1872, and worked one year and seven months with John Walters, of Downer's Grove, whose business he then bought, and has since continued, making a specialty of repairing and building spring wagons, and doing an excellent trade. In 1881, he added a livery to his other business, and is meeting with good success in that line. He married, January 17 1874, Barbara, daughter of Henry and Helena Schumpp, and from this union three children have been born, viz., Eugene, Ida and Helen. Mrs Schmitt's parents were early settlers here, and had six children, five of whom are living. Mr. Schmitt is a Democrat; members of the Catholic Church."

Source: Blanchard Rufus, History of DuPage County Illinois (Chigago: O.L. Baskin
& Co., 1882), p120.

The above information led to further research of his parents, brothers, and children. Further research needs to be done as to the actual date of his marriage to Barbara Schumpp. One Illinois Index record has 7 January 1875 which differs from the date stated here. I need to look at Illinois marriage records to confirm. The Eugene that is mentioned as a child is Eugenia. Quirin and Barbara Schump had two more children: Lucy and Alois, after the publication of this sketch. In addition, Quirin remarried Bernice Carpinski, after the death of his first wife, and they had one daughter, Antoinette.

Using county histories can fill in a few blanks in your search of an ancestor's life. How do you use county histories?

Kirk and his brother and two sisters were all born at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The hospital located at 200 Jefferson Ave. SE has undergone many changes since the Leyndyke siblings were born there in the 1950's.

St. Mary's started in August of 1893 as a 15 bed hospital by the Sisters of Mercy. It was located in what was then a house turned into a hospital. St. Mary's acquired homes and land near the original hospital and grew into what it is today.

The Chicago Illinois Catholic Church Records are not indexed on Family Search and I had to go page by page to find the baptismal record of Kirk's great uncle, Howard James Corcoran. It was kind of a hunt and peck method for awhile. I was going on faith that Howard was baptized in the same church that his parents were married in and I got lucky! It helped that I had Howard's birth date, 9 February 1907.

The record above is for Howard James Corcoran, born Feb 9, 1907. Father is Timothy Corcoran and Ellen Smith (actually, it is Helen Schmitt, but she went by Smith for some reason.). Sponsors are Bertram Venard and Agnes Venard. Howard was baptized on Feb 24th 1907. Signed by E. S. Keough. In the margin of the baptismal record is a note that says "married Hope Catherine Gorham Sept 11, 1943" with words I am assuming is in Latin and I cannot read.

I love that the marriage record was recorded with the baptismal record. I wonder if that was common to do in the Catholic records. It is the first one I have seen that did it. More research is needed on Bertam and Agnes Venard, were they relatives?

In addition to providing me with Howard's baptismal record, it helps me to narrow down when Timothy and Helen Corcoran moved to Michigan. It is amazing when you go looking for one record and it opens up other avenues of research. That is what this baptismal record did for me.

VAN OVEREN- Abraham VanOveren aged 78, entered into rest, Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Douglas, 951 Lyon st. N. E. Surviving are three sons, A. (Bud) VanOveren of Muskegon, E. Russell VanOveren, 1st sergeant with the armed forces in Australia; four daughters, Mrs. Robert Douglas of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Peter Leyn Dyke and Mrs. W.F. Wood, both of Flint, Mich. and Mrs N. Hunter of Elkhart, and eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a brother, Richard VanOveren of East Paris; a sister, Mrs. Frank Van Ysseldyke of Grand Rapids. Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 2 o'clock at the Van Hof Funeral Home where the body reposes. Interment in Fair Plains cemetery.

For the most part this obituary is accurate. The obituary states that there were three sons and only names two. Abraham had two sons with names as stated. The four daughters are correct. Mrs. Robert Douglas was his daughter, Ada May; Mrs Peter Leyn Dyke was his daughter, Nellie; Mrs. W.F. Wood was his daughter, Lois, and Mrs. N. Hunter was his daughter, Jeannie Martha. More research is needed to determine the name of his sister.

Kirk and I obtained a copy of this obituary when we were researching at Grand Rapids Public Library and of course, I did not write down the source information. It is from one of the Grand Rapids newspapers, around October 22, 1943.

The day of Aunt Cecil's funeral was one where the weather was so icy, we couldn't travel across state to go to it. Kirk was very fond of his Great Aunt Cecil. She spent the last few years of her life in a nursing home and when we would go to Grand Rapids to see his parents, we would try to stop in and spend time with her. We would play scrabble with her or just sit and talk. She was a very nice, kind and lovely woman.

Cecil A. Dollaway was born to Willis G. and Francis (Denny) Dollaway on 17 May 1899 near Lowell, Kent, Michigan. She married Rolland Jessup on 6 August 1920 in Lowell, Kent, Michigan. Rolland and Cecil never had any children. Cecil died 21 January 1982 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan and is buried in Blythefield Memory Gardens, Rockford, Kent, Michigan.

Usually, I start with the most recent census date and work backwards. I am creating tables for each ancestor with the census information. This helps me to see where I am missing information and what next steps I need to take in my research. Below is the table for Kirk's great grandmother, Helen Schmitt, who married Timothy Corcoran. I have been unable to find Helen Schmitt in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census. She was not recorded in the home of her father and she wasn't married yet to be included with Timothy Corcoran. I have added that to my to do list and hope to locate her one of these days.
Where in the World is Timothy F. Corcoran?

One of the first records I look for when researching an ancestor is the census record. I try to follow my subject through the years in the census. Nothing frustrates me more than when I cannot locate the ancestor in the census record. I know he/she did not fall off the face of the earth, so where are they hiding? In the case of Timothy Corcoran, I can't find him in two censuses.

Timothy would be four years old in 1880, but I cannot find his family, who I believe is father, Timothy; sisters, Hannah and Josie; brothers, John, James, and Patrick. Timothy was born in Chicago, Illinois and I thought they would be living in Illinois during this time. Timothy was 23 in the 1900 Census. The census that year was taken in June. Timothy married Helen Smith (Schmitt) on 5 June 1900 in Pullman, Cook, Illinois. Did this contribute to my not finding him? I have been known to go through the census, page by page, but I am not ready to attempt that for Chicago!

The table below shows where in the world Timothy Corcoran was? If you have any information on this family, please leave a note. I am going to find Timothy in the other census dates.

Transcription:

QURIN SCHMITT OLD RESIDENT OF VILLAGE, PASSES

Was Born in France in 1853 and Came to Downers Grove 50 Years Ago

Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Joseph's Catholic church in North Main street, for Quirin Schmitt, who passed away Saturday morning, March 12 at the home of his daughter, Miss Lucy, in East Maple avenue after a long illness. Solemn requiem mass was said by Dr. Eneas B. Goodwin, pastor of the church and burial was made at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Naperville at the side of his first wife who died twenty eight years ago. Mr. Schmitt has been ill since last November and for many weeks was a patient at the Hinsdale sanitarium. Four weeks ago he was removed to the home of his daughter.

Quirin Schmitt was born April 30, 1853 at Freisenheim, Alsace, France, the youngest of seven children of Raymond and Theresa Schmitt. He attended the French schools and came to the United States with an older brother, George, when he was twenty years of age. Landing in New York, he lived there for a year and then came to Downers Grove where he has lived for fifty three years.

Shortly after coming to the village he worked at the wagon makers trade for a man by the name of Walters whose shop was at the southeast corner of Maple avenue and Main street. Later he and Peter Wertz went into business. This was in the building at Maple and Main now occupied by the blacksmith shop. They moved their business to Grove street, west of Main and were in business together a number of years.

Mr. Schmitt is known to most of the people of the community probably better as a liveryman than as a wagon maker. He bought the livery stable in Grove street from George Mochel, who now lives in Hinsdale, and conducted it for a number of years before selling out to Chas. Baker. After Mr. Baker purchased a location in West Railroad street and erected a building of his own, Mr. Schmitt again entered the livery and boarding stable business and conducted it until the growing popularity of the automobile made it no longer profitable.

He was married in 1874 to Miss Barbara Schumpp and four daughters, all of whom survive, were born to this union. They are Mrs. Eugenia Pfaff, of Benton avenue; Miss Lucy Smith, Miss Ida Smith, and Mrs. Helen Corcoran of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Mrs. Schmitt passed away twenty eight years ago and in 1902 Mr. Schmitt was married to Bernice Carpenski, who with one daughter, Miss Antionette, survives him.

He also leaves a brother, George, of Forest Park and a brother, Amand, whose home is in Besanson, France.

This obituary is one of the great ones in my genealogy collection. Prior to this obituary, I hadn't know much about Quirin Schmitt, Kirk's great, great grandfather. Kirk and I, on one of our trips to visit our daughter, Kirsten, in Chicago, decided to take a side trip to Downers Grove, Illinois. We went to the Downer's Grove library and did a little research. It is here that I found Quirin's obituary. I found other information that corroborates much of what was in his obituary. Quirin Schmitt was an early resident of Downer's Grove and information on him can be found in early histories of the area.

I was able to research Quirin further from the information in his obituary. I found marriage, census, death and cemetery records using the information above. I was able to research his wives and children, too. It doesn't get much better than that.

Do you have an obituary that is filled with genealogical treasures? I don't have many as complete as this one, but the ones I do have, I cherish.Brenda Leyndykehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08530495186632931677noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3478536316083112738.post-10843183022529341202013-07-25T08:26:00.000-04:002013-07-25T08:26:00.075-04:00Those Places Thursday-Marywood Academy, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Kirk's mother, Elizabeth (first row, second from left), graduated from Marywood Academy in June, 1946. Marywood Academy was a private catholic school, located on East Fulton Street, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was a four story building situated on beautifully, landscaped grounds. A picture of it as it was in 1944 can be found here.

The left side of the building was where the classrooms and rooms for boarding students were. Elizabeth was a day student, meaning she went home after school. The right side of the building was where the nuns lived. The chapel was in the center on the first floor.

Kirk and I took a day and explored Grand Rapids. We took pictures that were genealogical in nature. The picture below is how Marywood looks now. The 34 acre campus is no longer a school, but a home for Dominican Sisters. Space is leased to a few community programs, such as Headstart. Chapels, administrative offices, and a Health Center are located at Marywood. The Dominican Center is here, too. It is a place where groups can meet to hold retreats, conferences, etc.

The trees have grown since Kirk's mother attended, but Marywood is still in existence, much as it was in the 1940's. It is a wonderful piece of Grand Rapids history and one of our family's history as well.

I thought that might be true as Timothy Corcoran and Helen Smith's marriage license stated they were married in Pullman. I knew enough about Pullman to know that it was a company town. I set about trying to prove that Timothy Corcoran did work for the Pullman Company.

My first step was to google Pullman Company. From here, I checked out the following websites:

Wikipedia: Pulllman Company-a basic overview and history of the company is here.

Pullman State Historic Site-an excellent resource for all things Pullman. History, pictures, company advertisements and more can be found here.

Newberry Library-Pullman Archives- a pdf. research guide for the Pullman Archives is available. It provides a list of what is available at the Newberry Library in Chicago for the Pullman Company.

South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society- this society located in Hazel Crest, Illinois proved to be my best source of information for my genealogy purposes. I was so impressed with what they have to offer, that I joined this society!

The South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society has the Pullman Car Company Employee Record's AND they provide free look-ups. The website does point out, "The collection does not include the records for all Pullman employees at all locations, and does not include records of Pullman porters." I didn't know what capacity that Timothy Corcoran was employed, but it was a free look up so I gave it a shot.

A quick search form is provided that one can copy and paste into an email for a look up. The information asked is Name, Date of Birth, Race, and Chicago Address, if known. I submitted my search except for the Chicago address and within days, I received a two page reply form listing 16 Corcoran's who worked for the company. One of them was Timothy Corcoran, born approx. 1876. This birth date fit with what I knew about Timothy.

Next, I sent a request and check for $7, society member price, to obtain Timothy's employee records. The cost for non members is $15. I was prepared to wait awhile for the records to reach me, but it didn't take that long. I was hoping I would get more than a name. I was really hoping for a birth certificate, or some proof of who his parents were.

Did I get such proof? No such luck, but what I did receive was two pages of records. The first page was a general information page. Click to enlarge.

It stated:

Name: Corcoran, Timothy
Department: Freight
country of birth: USA
Occupation: Mach. ?
Citizen: Yes
Total service with Co.: 4 yrs.
Family of 1 children and wife
When last employed by Co.: Nov. 03
How long: 3 3/4
Where: Freight 2988
Occupation: Mach
Reason for leaving: New Card
Foreman's Name Vander Veen
Old Check No. 3409
Other record with Co.: 3 mos. Boiler Rm

Other Employment During Past 12 Months: None
Relatives in Company's Employ: None.

I found this to be very interesting information. I learned that Timothy Corcoran did work at the Pullman Company. He was a machinist in the freight department, which correlates with later work he did when he moved to Grand Rapids. He worked for fours years, 1899-1903, for Pullman. These dates coincide with the date of his marriage, 1900, and the date his first child was born, January 1903. Interestingly, his record states that no other relatives were employed. Does this mean they never did, or was no one working there at the time Timothy did? None of the birth dates provided with the original search work for a father of Timothy.

The second sheet didn't provide much personal information, but it provided more work records. Some of the writing is faint and unreadable. The information provided includes:

Name: Corcoran, Timothy
Age: 28

Information on Check No., Department and Occupation, Pay Rate, Rate Increased, Transferred, Hired and Dropped is included in table form:
At the bottom of page two, was Timothy's signature, and address, 421 Stephenson St. The copy below is hard to read, but 416 Stevenson St. is crossed out and below it is written 421 Stephenson St. The copy I have is readable. Further research shows that Stephenson St. is now S. Champlain Street.

Kirk and I stopped at Historic Pullman on one of our trips to Chicago. We went to the Visitor's Center and took a walking/car tour on our own. I took many pictures. One is looking down S. Champlain Street. The street Timothy; his wife, Helen; and their son, Bert, lived on. One can visit Pullman, today, and imagine what it would have been like to live there. My husband and I walked the same streets that many Pullman employees walked to get to work. There are efforts being made to make Pullman a National Park.

I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share a pedigree chart of a different sort, a dog pedigree chart. My daughter, Kirsten, and her husband, Chase, adopted a puppy from PAWS Chicago. They didn't know what kind of dog Ella was and when they asked the veterinarian, she thought Ella was part dachshund and possibly, a little basset hound.

Kirsten was curious and decided to do a DNA test on her. In order for the doggy DNA to work, a dog must have a pure-breed in their preceding three generations. Well, who would have thought that Ella's breed comes from the Netherlands. I am surrounded by Dutch ancestry. My husband is half dutch, my children have dutch ancestry, and now I find out my grand-dog is Dutch!

Ella, the dachshund mix is now Ella, the Keeshond mix. I had never heard of a Keeshond before. My daughter did a little research to learn more and wrote an excellent blog post about it. A Keeshond, pronounced kayz-hawnd, was bred between the 17th and 18th century in The Netherlands. It came to the United States in the 1920's. The Keeshond is also known as a Dutch Barge Dog.

Ella doesn't look like a Keeshond, but some of her traits match one. Ella is a part of our family and I think it is wonderful that she is a Dutch breed. Who would have known?

Lately, hockey has been the focus of my attention and blogging has taken a backseat. Our daughter, Kirsten, is married to Chase Agnello-Dean, who is the Director of Photography for the Chicago Blackhawks. Chase has had an incredibly busy Spring. Last night, the Chicago Blackhawks became the 2013 Stanley Cup Winner. Chase was on hand to capture the moment in Boston. Congratulations! It was a great series.
Official photographers are required by the NHL to wear protective head gear when shooting near the ice and Chase complied. Chase has gotten a lot of attention for this. A Chicago news station ran a short video clip of Chase at one of the Stanley Cup games with his head gear on. People who know him have kidded him about it. He might have looked more excited if the head gear had fit.
The atmosphere at the United Center, where the Blackhawks play, is like no other. The fans stand and cheer loudly throughout the national anthem and it doesn't let up from there. Chelsea Dagger song is played whenever the Blackhawks score and win. It pumps the crowd up, including me. Rally flags are waving throughout the crowd. It is incredible. I even high-fived a few people after the Game 5 win.

Even Ella, Kirsten and Chase's dog, roots for the Blackhawks in her jersey. She does miss Chase when he travels with the team. Ella will sit on their rug by the door and wait for Chase to come home when he has been gone for too long.

Kirk and I were watching Game 6 at home. It looked like the Bruins were dominating and would force a game 7 back in Chicago. There was 76 seconds left and the Blackhawks score to tie the game. Okay, we will be going to overtime. 17 seconds later, Blackhawks score again! They take the lead. Are they going to win this on the road? Kirk and I are ecstatic. I am saying, yes, yes, yes. I play Chelsea Dagger on Itunes. I can hardly breathe. The seconds tick down and the Blackhawks win. What a game! Unbelievable! Kirsten and I start texting back and forth. We see Chase on TV. He is in the locker room getting drenched with champagne as he takes pictures. Kirsten comments about his suit needing to be cleaned. His camera's are getting drenched as well. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.

Chase is going to have a busy summer as he follows the cup around Chicago and photographs it. Kirsten will be a hockey widow and Ella will be sitting at the door later at night. It is a great experience and I am proud of Chase and how hard he works. I just hope he takes a moment and enjoys the time. He will be a part of Chicago Blackhawks history forever.
