Can you imagine being named the same name as your two deceased siblings?  Nellie VanOeveren was the third 'Nellie' in her family.  It's common for Dutch families to use the name again after someone dies.

Nellie VanOeveren was the fourth of eight children born to Abraham VanOeveren and Janna 'Jennie' Kosten VanOeveren.  She was born on 11 June 1896 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.  Her siblings were:
  • Nellie (1886-)
  • Nellie (1888-1889)
  • Ada (1890-
  • Jeannie (1902-)
  • Abraham Jr. 'Bud' (1905-1987)
  • Lois (1911-1999)
  • Edward Russell 'Russ' (1915-1999)

Abraham and Jennie VanOeveren: Tombstone Tuesday

VANOVEREN
JENNIE                        ABRAHAM
1866 MOTHER 1932      1865 FATHER 1943

Abraham and Jennie (Kosten) VanOveren are buried in Fairplains Cemetery, 2056 Diamond Ave Northeast, on the NW corner of Knapp Street and Fuller Avenue, Grand Rapids, Michigan.  They are in Lot 387; Block 2; Grave 1 & 2.

Abraham was born 20 June 1865 and died 22 October 1943.  Jennie was born 11 May 1866 and died 19 June 1932.  They both died in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.

Kirk's parents visited the cemetery office and were given the burial information below.  It looks like it is a family plot.  The handwritten notes on the bottom are written by Kirk's mother.  Jennie's 1931 burial date is an error.  She died in 1932.  I haven't researched the others enough to identify where they fit into the family.  I surmise that baby Abram was a child of Abraham and Jennie, but do not know that as fact.

VanOeveren: Surname Saturday

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: ,

I have traced the VanOeveren or VanOveren surname back to 1596 in the Netherlands.  The VanOeveren's in my husbands family originated in Sint Philipsland, Zeeland, Netherlands.

Abraham VanOeveren and Neeltje de Bruin immigrated to the United States in 1870.  They eventually settled in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.

My husband's, Kirk, line is as follows:
Nellie VanOeveren (1896-1994)
Abraham VanOeveren (1865-1943)
Abraham VanOeveren (1832-)  (the immigrant)
Abraham Johannisse vanOeveren (1788-1852)
Johannis vanOeveren (1750-1794)
Abraham Leendertszn vanOeveren (-1775)
Leendert Jansz vanOeveren (1663-1738)
Jan Huybrechtszn vanOeveren
