Addison B. Kennedy Marries Nellie van den Bos Luyendyk

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: ,

"Michigan, Marriages, 1868-1925," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3DC-4HM : accessed 08 Aug 2013), Addison B Kennedy and Nellie Vandenbos Linedike, 16 Mar 1903.

Kirk's great grandmother, Neeltje Cornelia "Nellie" van den Bos has been a source of intrigue for the family.  Nellie's son, Peter, didn't talk a lot about her and most of what the family does know, I have found through researching her. Nellie died when Peter was 15 years old.  Peter was using the last name, Kennedy.  When Peter was older he took his father's name back and spelled it the best he could remember, Leyn Dyke, instead of Luyendyk.

Nellie VandenBos Linedick, age 25, married Addison B. Kennedy, age 36, on 16 March 1903 by a Justice of the Peace in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.  This was Nellie's second marriage.  Her first marriage was to Cornelius Luyendyk in 1893.  Cornelius died in 1900, leaving Nellie with two young children, Peter and his sister, Lena.

I will be writing more about Nellie's husband, Addison, in the weeks to come and he may have shaved a few years off of his age when he married Nellie. Nellie and Addison's story is an interesting, perhaps a little tragic, one and I plan on writing more about them in the weeks ahead.

Neeltje van den Bos lived in quite a few places in her short thirty three years of life.  She came to the United States at the age of three with her parents, Marinus and Lena van den Bos settling in the Grand Rapids area. She was found in the 1900 United States Census with her husband, Cornelius Luyendyk, who she married at the age of sixteen.  It is indexed as Lundyk.  Neeltje Kennedy was found in the 1910 United States Census with her husband, Addison B. Kennedy, shortly before her death.

The Marriage of Cornelius Luyendyk and Neeltje Cornelia van den Bos

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: ,

One hundred nineteen years ago today, Kirk's great grandparents were married.  Cornelius Linedyk and Nellie Bush, as their names were recorded in the Kent County marriage book, were married in Dorr Center, Michigan.

The table below is from the transcription that I took when I visited the county clerk's office.  This simple entry in a county marriage ledger prompted a few questions.

1.  Why is Nellie's name recorded as Bush?  Her maiden name was van den Bos.  I would love to know the story of their marriage.  What did her parent's think of their daughter getting married to a man twice her age.

2.  Where in Dorr Center were they married?  A church, friend's house, justice of peace or ?  Cornelius was living in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the time, which is about 20 miles North of Dorr.

Unfortunately, Cornelius and Nellie were only married six and a half years.  Cornelius died in 1900, leaving a   22 year old wife with two young children, ages three and five.

Grandpa Had a Sister?!-Wednesday's Child

Kirk's grandfather, Peter Leyn Dyke, never talked about his sister to anyone's knowledge.  I was looking for Peter in the 1900 United States Census records (indexed as Lundyk) and found Peter living with his father, Cornelius; mother, Neeltje; AND sister, Lena.  I did a double take when I found that record.

Source:  1900 U.S. Census, , Population Schedule, Paris Township, Kent, Michigan, ED 86, p 21, dwelling 458, Head of household Conelius Lundyk.

I asked Peter's son, James Leyndyke, if he knew about Lena.  He didn't and thought it may have been a cousin of Peter's.  I suppose that could have been a possibility, but I didn't give up researching her.  Eventually, I found Lena's birth record at Michigan Births 1867-1902 at familysearch.org.  She was born 30 September 1896 in Gaines Township, Kent, Michigan.  Her parents were listed as Cornelius Luendyke and Nellie Luendyke.  A visit to the Kent County Clerk's Office in Grand Rapids, Michigan confirmed that information.

It wasn't until the picture above arrived at Kirk's parent's house that the family believed she really did exist.   Peter's daughter, Betty, sent a few pictures at her brother Jim's request.  This was one of them.  What a treasure!

I was intrigued to find out more.  Why didn't anyone in the family know about her?  Why wasn't she ever mentioned by her brother, Peter?

Unfortunately, she died at the age of 13.  Lena's father Cornelius died in 1900.  Her mother, Neeltje, remarried Addison B. Kennedy in 1903.  The family moved to Chicago and lived there with the last name of Kennedy.  Lena Marie Kennedy died 1 March 1910 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.  She is buried in Mount Greenwood Cemetery, Chicago, Cook, Illinois.  Sadly, there is no headstone.

So, why didn't Peter talk about his sister, or for that matter, his step-sister?  A few things need to be taken into consideration.  First, five months after Lena's death, Peter's mother, Neeltje, died.  I imagine this threw the whole family into a grieving state.  Peter was 15 at the time.  Can you imagine losing your sister and a few months later, your mother at such a young age?  I am sure Peter coped the best he could and it was one of those things you probably didn't talk about.

I am thankful I found Lena in the family. I only wish I had found her before Peter Leyn Dyke died, or maybe it was better I didn't.  I wouldn't want to be the one responsible for bringing up memories that Peter may have wanted to remain his own.

Cornelius Luyendyk and Nellie van den Bos: Wedding Wednesday

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: , , , , , ,

Once I discovered the name of Kirk's great grandfather, Cornelius Luyendyk, I wanted to find as much information as I could about him.  Cornelius' son, Peter LeynDyke, didn't remember much about his father. Peter was five at the time of his father's death.

The first place I looked was in the U.S. Federal Census records for Cornelius Luyendyk.  Not as easy of a task as you might imagine, the spelling of Luyendyk was all over the place.  Once I discovered he was living in Kent County from 1880 until his death in 1900, Kirk and I planned a trip to the county clerk's office in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  One of the records I found was the marriage record of Cornelius Linedyk and Nellie Bush.  Below is the transcription of that record.

Nellie Kennedy: Tombstone Tuesday

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: , , , , , , , ,

The above card is in the possession of Kirk's Aunt Betty.  She was kind enough to send an envelope of genealogical related things to us and I scanned them and sent them back.  It wasn't until I saw this location card that I knew what cemetery Kirk's great grandmother was buried in.

Nellie Kennedy was Neeltje Cornelia 'Nellie' van den Bos.  She was born 29 July 1877 in St. Philipsland, Zeeland, Netherlands.  She was the daughter of Marinus 'Martin' van den Bos and Lena Nellie Quist.

Nellie van den Bos married 1) Cornelius Luyendyk on 17 November 1893 in Dorr Center, Allegan, Michigan.  2) Addison B. Kennedy on 16 March 1903 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.

The family believed she was buried in Chicago, but never knew for sure.  One weekend while visiting my daughter, Kirsten, who lives in Chicago, Kirk and I decided to go to Mount Greenwood Cemetery.  It is located at 2900 W. 111th Street, Chicago, Illinois.  It is in the southwestern part of Chicago.

Nellie's location card stated that she was buried in Lot 2, Section 15, Tier 19, Grave 1.  Finding Section 15 was easy with the use of the above map.  The tiers were well-marked with stone numbers at the edge of the road.  Kirk and I found Section 15-Tier 19, but no gravestone.  We did find a grassy area that we presumed was her grave.  Did her grave get covered with grass?  We didn't have anything to check for a buried tombstone and the office was closed, so we left disappointed.  I emailed Mount Greenwood and discovered there never was a gravestone purchased for Nellie Kennedy.  If I had a lot of disposable income I would love to purchase one for Nellie.

Nellie Kennedy died 22 August 1910, at the age of 33, from consumption(tuberculosis).  She had been sick for four months.  She left two children, Peter LeynDyke age 15, and Janie Haviland Kennedy age 3.  Another daughter, Lena Marie Luyendyk, died in March of 1910, just five months before her mother, of pneumonia.  Could her death have contributed to Nellie's sickness and eventual death?

The First van den Bos Immigrant: Marinus van den Bos and Family

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: , , , , , ,

The first van den Bos (Vandenbos) immigrant in Kirk's family came to the United States on 12 Mar 1881.  Marinus 'Martin' van den Bos; his wife, Lena (Quist) van den Bos; and four year old daughter, Neeltje Cornelia 'Nellie' van den Bos travelled in steerage from Rotterdam, Holland (Netherlands) to New York, USA aboard the ship 'Amsterdam'.

The family eventually settled in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.  Nellie van den Bos married Cornelius Luyendyk 17 November 1893 in Dorr Center, Allegan, Michigan.  Cornelius and Nellie Luyendyk are Kirk's great grandparents.
