Glover-Leyndyke Wedding Day

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: , , , ,

Today my husband, Kirk, and I celebrate our 32nd anniversary.  It was a beautiful, spring day for our 5:30 PM wedding.  The sun was shining through the stained glass window above the altar.  Here are a couple of pictures from that day.

Wedding Wednesday: Leona Dollaway and Bertrand Corcroan

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: , ,

Ask and it will be given to you.  I had written on my blog how I would like to have a wedding picture of Kirk's grandparents, Bertrand and Leona Corcoran.  My mother-in-law emailed me and said her sister, Helen, had their wedding picture at one time and maybe Helen's daughter had a copy of it.

I contacted one of Helen's sons and he contacted his sister and within a few days I had a copy of the picture.  I love this picture.  I love the veil, the dress and the flowers.  I think it is a true depiction of the 1920's fashion.

Leona Dollaway, the daughter of Willis G. Dollaway and Francis Denny Dollaway, married Bertrand Francis Corcoran, the son of Timothy Corcoran and Helen Schmitt Corcoran on 3 June 1925 at St. Andrew's Cathedral, Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.  Leona was 20 years old and Bert was 22 years old.

The marriage record of Bert and Leona Corcoran states that Frances Freel and Louise Margold were witnesses.  My mother-in-law believes that is who is in the picture with them.

Where in the World is Leona Dollaway Corcoran?

Where in the World is Leona Dollaway Corcoran?

One of the first place a genealogist looks for family information is in census records.  I have decided to make census tables showing the place of residence for each ancestor.  The census table below is for Kirk's maternal grandmother, Leona Dollaway who married Bertrand Corcoran, in 1925.  I am having trouble locating Leona, and the Dollaway's, in the 1920 United States Census.  I believe they were living in Lowell Township, Kent, Michigan at this time.  I went page by page for Lowell census records and didn't find them.  I used Heritage Quest, Ancestry.com and Family Search census records.  I even searched for all the Leona's in Michigan at Heritage Quest.

Those Places Thursday-St. Andrew's Cathedral, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: , , , , ,

Kirk and I spent a day last summer visiting ancestral places in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  This is the  area where many of Kirk's ancestors settled.

One special visit was to St. Andrew's Cathedral.    St. Andrew's is located at 301 Sheldon Blvd., Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Kirk's grandfather, Bertrand Corcoran, attended high school at Catholic Central High School which is across the piazza of St. Andrew's.  Kirk's grandparents, Bertrand and Leona (Dollaway) Corcoran were married here in 1925.  I would love to have a picture of their wedding at St. Andrew's, but so far haven't found one.  Kirk's great grandparents, Timothy F. Corcoran and Helen (Schmitt) Corcoran's funerals were held at St. Andrew's.

Timothy Corcoran and family lived on Lafayette Street in Grand Rapids, which is just a few blocks from St. Andrew's.  St. Andrew's was the family church when Bertrand and his brother, Howard, were growing up.

The pictures below are from our visit to St. Andrew's in 2012.

Grandma Dollaway's (Francis) Cookbook-Family Recipe Friday

Cover Page of Grandma Dollaway's (Francis) Cookbook

My husband and I were visiting his parents on Mother's Day weekend and I decided to take my flip-pal scanner with me.  My mother-in-law had mentioned that she had her Grandma Dollaway's cookie recipe and I thought it would be a good idea to scan the recipe and use it for a blog post.
I asked my mother-in-law, Betty, if I could make a scan of her Grandma's recipes and she said she didn't have them, her daughter did.  They were going to be seeing her daughter the next day and she would ask her to bring them and then I could scan them the next time I visited.  I didn't think much of it, I could wait.

Later that same week, I took my niece, Betty's granddaughter, for a visit.  When I got there Betty said she had the recipes.  She handed me two black books.  I was surprised, I had only expected a recipe card or two.  I didn't even know the recipe books existed.  As a lover of recipe collections I was thrilled.  So what I thought would be a cookie recipe or two turned into a whole lot more.

The two books were recipes that had been written in daily calendar books.  The 1939 Calendar book of recipes is written in Grandma Dollaway's handwriting and this is her recipe book.  It contained cakes, coffee cakes, quick breads, hash, biscuits, cookies, pies, and more.  There is even a dandelion blossom wine recipe.  One recipe I have been tempted to try is the home remedy for rheumatism and arthritis.  Credit was given to the recipe's owner.  Some of the names include Agnes (Francis Dollaway's son's, Roy, wife), Betty's, Lottie Smith, Mrs. Martin, Florence Baily, Alice D., Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Earnst, Josie (Francis Dollaway's sister, Josephine), Cecil (Francis Dollaway's daughter), Mrs. Jessup (Francis Dollaway's daughter's, Cecil, mother-in-law), and Leona (Francis Dollaway's daughter and my mother-in-law's mother).  Some of the women above were women that Francis worked for.  She worked as a housekeeper.  I was so excited to get my husband's great grandmothers recipe, but that wasn't the only recipe I got.  There was one of Grandma Denny's recipes for Molasses included.  Grandma Denny was Francis Dollaway's mother, my husband's 2x great grandmother!
Ice Box Cookies Recipe from Grandma Dollaway's (Francis) Cookbook
This is the cookbook that contains the recipe for Grandma Dollaway's Ice Box Cookies, the original recipe I thought I would scan.  I haven't made them yet, but one thing I noticed is the lack of instructions for mixing and baking.  I am a little surprised the measurements are included.  Cooking and baking was such a routine in those days that they didn't need measurements or instructions, they just knew.
Ice Box Cookies
3/4 cup lard
3/4 cup Butter
1 cup Brown Sugar
1 cup White Sugar
1 tsp. cinnamons
1 cup nutmeats
4 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 teaspoon soda
Press in tin or roll put in ice box until next day.
What was in the second cookbook?  You will have to check back to find the answer to that.
Who is Grandma Dollaway?

L-R Cecil Dollaway Jessup with her mother, Francis Denny Dollaway
Grandma Dollaway is Francis Denny Dollaway.  She was born in Lowell, Kent, Michigan on 13 April 1866 to Joseph W. Denny and Adelia Degan Denny.  She lived near Lowell, Michigan most of her life, along the river and near what they called Dollaway hills.  She died on 22 February 1955 at the age of 88.  Kirk has a few memories of going to her house, she always had lemon drops in a jar with a lid on them, which would be a treat for a four year old.
Other names mentioned:
Betty-Francis Dollaway's granddaughter, Kirk's mother
Leona- Leona Dollaway Corcoran; Francis Dollaway's daughter, Betty's mother, Kirk's grandmother
Cecil-Cecil Dollaway Jessup, pictured above; Francis Dollaway's daughter, Leona's sister
Grandma Denny-Adelia DeGan Denny; Francis Dollaway's mother who lived from 1830-1905 and Kirk's 2x great grandmother.

Happy Birthday, Grandma Lee

Kirk's grandma, Leona Dollaway Corcoran, was born 30 May 1905, near Lowell, Kent, Michigan.  She was the eighth of nine children born to Willis George Dollaway and Francis A. Denny.

Leona married Bertrand Francis Corcoran on 3 June 1925 at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  She had five children:  Richard, Elizabeth, Helen, Nancy and John.

She lived to be 100 years old.  She spent most of her life living in the Grand Rapids area.  She was fondly referred to as Grandma Lee.  My family was fortunate to get to know Grandma Lee.  She and her friend, Lois, would go for a Sunday drive and stop by and visit.  I remember visiting Grandma Lee one time, when she was in her 80's, and she was complaining about the old people who drive and go to the grocery store.  I had to chuckle.  She was still driving at this time.

Sometime in her 90's she moved to South Carolina, where her son lived.  Unfortunately, we didn't get to South Carolina before she died in 2005.  I will forever be thankful for her grandmotherly presence in our lives.

Grandma Lee's Hope Chest: Treasure Chest Thursday

Author: Brenda Leyndyke / Labels: ,

This hope chest belonged to my husband's maternal grandmother, Leona Dollaway Corcoran, who we called Grandma Lee.  I have it under my wall of family pictures in my 'genealogy room'

Currently, I am storing a few linens in it.  It also makes a great area for genealogy research overload and, occasionally, the top of it is full of files and paper records.  It is a treasure as our family has fond memories of Grandma Lee.
